Matters of the heart seem to have the longest hold on us. There are events that happen in our life that can tear a hole right in our heart. I cannot mention any in this post because I do not want to bring up any memories that may produce a setback for someone.  

But I can offer from experience some comfort if you are dealing with an event that hit you right in the heart. Time does heal all wounds. Even the holes left that you think will never heal, they do.
